Okay, so I have VisualGDB set up to use the 7.12 GDB on my target. The first thing I notice is that starting my application takes forever! Lots of libraries being loaded from the target! This makes e hope that I do not have to stay using GDB on the target.

Anyway, I still have the same issue I had when GDB was run on the build server. Without the “follow-fork-mode child” set the application runs to the first line, I have a breakpoint there. I also have other breakpoints set. When I run the application from this first line the target disconnects from GDB:

I have narrowed down when this occurs, it is when my application executes a “system” command:

int iReturn = system( &szCommand[0] );

This does NOT occur if I run the 7.10 toolchain.

Also, I tested using the 7.10 toolchain using GDB on the target with the “follow-fork-mode” set to “child” and GDB does NOT follow the fork to the child process.

So, 7.10 does not allow child process debugging and 7.12 does not allow me to debug my application at all.

Any help resolving this would be much appreciated,

I have purchased an upgrade to the Custom edition and upgraded my installation with the new key.

However, I don’t seem to find how to tell VGDB to use GDB on my target board? When I try to customize the path to GDB the computer selection is greyed out. Is there some other setting I need to adjust first?

The logfile above is a test of my application with the “fork” commented out and. I removed the option in order to test the basic GDB 7.12 before I tested the child process debug.

I have had to revert to 7.10 in order to have VisualGDB work on even a single process application.

I have installed GCC 7.12 on my build server and also on my target. Now I cannot debug either my main process or the child process.

I have a breakpoint on the first line of “main” and running the program (F5) it stops at that breakpoint, I an then execute the next instruction. However, after placing a breakpoint on the first line of the child process code and then running again (F5) I see the following in the gdbserver window:

Do you have some other suggestion? This will become a big problem for my project if I cannot debug the child process, plus I expect to need to be able to switch between parent/child debugging in the same debug session as the complexity of the code grows to fulfill the specification,

I think I figured this out. I added “set output-radix 16” to the GDB startup parameters and now my arrays display as hex numbers.

However, I would expect that if I used the VS context menu to select hex display then VisualGDB should indeed display my arrays as hex.

Also, is there a way to have the mixed hex and ASCII display as VS normally does for unsigned and signed chars?

I have no idea how to run GDB outside of VisualGDB, that is the reason I like VisualGDB so much!

The version of GDB running is 7.10.

I saw a note about follow-fork-mode required “extended-remote” mode, I don’t know what this is but it sounds like the way VisualGDB uses GDB. Could that be a problem?

BKPT #2 is at the start of “main.”

BKPT #2 is the first line after the “fork” and is in the child process:

If I have breakpoints in the parent process they are still hit after the fork, breakpoints in the child process are never hit.

The hard-coded breakpoint does not cause GDB to break at that place. Breakpoints in the parent process continue to be hit so it appears GDB is not following the child process.

The code being debugged is in a shared library, I would not expect this to be the issue, but perhaps it is a factor?

 

If I set a breakpoint at the start of the parent process I notice that VS2015 reports it “Cannot be resolved”.

If I remove the “fork” and debug the code in a single process then it works fine.

OK, adding an extra project to get the common folder does seem to work, I need to think about upgrading to “Custom”, it seems expensive just to have this one feature, however maybe there are other features that I may need in the future. Since I am developing with remote computer and separate ARM deployment machine are there other features you think I may need that would make the upgrade appear less expensive :o)
