    First, I must say, I love VisualGDB – it has changed my embedded life, thank you for making it!

     

    Background:

    I’m using the C11 flag ‘-fms-extensions’ in a project (target is an ARM Cortex M7) for use of anonymous structs & unions. Here’s an example of these from the GCC reference on the topic:

    Problem:

    Using anonymous structs & unions in my code complies fine with the addition of the CFLAG  ‘-fms-extensions’, but the VisualGDB Clang-based IntelliSense Engine will underline member calls with an ‘Error: no member named …’ warning. It also does not include the anonymous members in the code completion popup.

     

    Observations/Attempts to fix:

    Added ‘-fms-extensions’ to VisualGDB Project Properties->IntelliSense Settings field ‘Additional flags for C files’, no change.

    Switched the IntelliSense engine to ‘Use native Visual Studio  IntelliSense Engine’ in VisualGDB Project Properties->IntelliSense Settings and the problem resolved (no underlined error, anonymous members now present in code completion pop-up), but at the expense of not using the nice and fast Clang-based engine.

    Hi,

    Normally the Clang IntelliSense should automatically pick this flag from the project settings. If not, please try adding it to VisualGDB Project Properties -> IntelliSense Settings -> Additional flags for C++ files.

    Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried adding the flag to both C & C++ additional flag fields (image attached), but the error persists.

    Are there any other areas within program the Clang flags could be applied to, or overwritten by?

    Hi,

    Strange. Could you please open the Clang IntelliSense Diagnostics Console, switch to the Project View and paste the CXXFLAGS for the project shown there? This should help understand what exact flags are fed into clang.

    Hello, I have the same problem. I set flags like bfessler, but it still shows me the error related to anonymous struct members. It does not pass flags from settings. There is no -fms-extensions flag. I have CMake project.

    Hi,

    This is by design. Our clang engine automatically strips the options that were not tested for compatibility when applying the raw flags reported by CMake.

    There are a few easy workarounds though:

    • You could try adding “-fms-extensions” to the VisualGDB Project Properties -> IntelliSense Settings -> CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS.
    • You could also try editing the CppEngineTuningInfo.xml file in the VisualGDB directory (add -fms-extensions to RelevantCFLAGPrefixes) and restarting Visual Studio.

    Please be advised, that we have not explicitly tested this flag with our engine, so it might cause unexpected side effects.
